East Woods Road

I always knew that was something
not right about the home
at the end of the East Woods Road.

There was a family of five,
a father that worked out of town,
a mother that stayed at home,
three daughters of various ages.

When the daughters went to our school
their clothes were worn down.
They kept to themselves,
would not make eye contact
with anyone around them.
They just looked down.

Never saw the mother.
You could hear the voice
raised periodically
but never the visual.

Until one night
the sirens lit up the sky.
Such chaos in the woods.
We all gathered at the
beginning of the road
afraid to look in.

The excitement of that night
brought so many stories
until the truth was told.

During one of the rare nights
that the father was home
he saw bruises on his girls
blank, lifeless faces.

Outraged, he confronted the mother.
The bite back to him was defiant.
The mother did not deny.
It was a way to keep
the daughters under control.

A yelling fight turned physical
with all five fighting.
The mother’s head got struck
and she stopped moving.
The internal bleeding took her life.

There is still confusion
about what happened
up on East Woods Road
but they say
the youngest would not stop smiling.
